The best that is possible, please. Thank you.

March 14th, 2010

Do you find it amusing when people say to you, with much sincerity and no small level of grave concern, “Well, given the circumstances and all, I certainly do want to wish you the best that is possible,” when their intent is clearly that they are wishing you the best that they think is probable?

I mean, really, the best that is possible is always the best.

Everything is possible; so in some situations, just wishing the best, or all good, is a much better wish to give to people.  Unless you really mean all that is possible, and not just all that is probable.  The latter is squashingly limiting, don’t you think?

Wish me the best that is possible and mean it, and I will do all the hard work play of  imagining what that best will be.

I thank you very much.
