Notes

Revised and edited notes as of 6 April, 2010

Doug’s diet is based on Protein, fat, and fresh fruits and vegetables, as organic as we can make it, given a few restraints of medical conditions, availability of organic foods, and time.

Protein is from fish, eggs, Life Extension Creatine Whey Protein with Glutamine, chicken, and occasionally-served lamb, pork, and red meats.  I try to fit in at least two generous scoops of whey with glutamine per day.

Fats are from fish oil (lemon flavored), coconut oil, hemp oil, coconut milk, avocadoes, soy milk, and whole milk yogurt, as well as some fats from the protein sources.

Doug gets at least 1 cup of live culture yogurt, 1 tsp of turmeric, ¼ tsp of saffron, and 3T of fish oil every day, in addition to (usually) one whole can of coconut milk and 3T of coconut oil and 3 T of hemp oil.  Every day, he has at least two servings of fresh or fresh frozen fruit and three servings of fresh or fresh frozen vegetables, not counting the cooked stuff.

Carbohydrates are from the fruits and vegetables, and occasionally from rice, potatoes, and cream of rice cereal.

Because of the adhesions, the fresh fruits and vegetables available to Doug must be, if from any significantly fiber-laden plants, strained.  So we have a lot of amazingly great drinks (including one we call Hobbit Juice–recipe above) made from pureeing a variety of chopped plants with some ice cubes, all swirled in the VitaMix for a couple of minutes.  Then the juice is strained.  Doug also has applesauce, bananas, pulp-free Orange July-Threes (recipe above), and many Haas Avocadoes.

The basis for many of my recipes is Thai Kitchen Organic, first press, unsweetened coconut milk, which is both calorie dense and has medium-chain lipids (easily digested).  I purchase this coconut milk by the case from a health food store by.

Recipes can be found above.

Coconut oil is used to increase the caloric value of many dishes.  Coconut oil reduces inflammation in the tissues, and is easily digested.   Fish oil reduces inflammation even better, and is available lemon-flavored. Doug takes 1 or 2 tsps of fish oil 3 or 4 times a day.

Other Notes

Try to take Bio Max III tablets every day according to directions.  (Ask  your naturopath about these and other vitamins and supplements you take.)  BioMax III may be available in liquid form.  The tablets are LARGE, and if you have trouble swallowing, you may need to cut them in half, or grind them up and add them to soup or applesauce.  It is not the best taste to add, but tolerable.

Fish oil is very helpful for reducing the inflammation that exacerbates catabolic wasting.  Taking 1-2 tsp. of fish oil three or four times a day is very helpful.

As much as possible, avoid refined sugars, commercially processed foods, and gluten.  Dairy is best consumed as live culture yogurt.

Good oils and fats include fish oil, hemp oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and flax oil.
